The marriage to Nancy is recorded in the Indiana Marriage files, date of marriage being 9 Jan 1859. However ... that produces a mystery rather than an answer, as her name is shown as Nancy Tadlock on the record. Thus ... did the record maker err and place the married name instead of the maiden name OR was Nancy a relative?

The 1860 and 1870 census files support the fact that his first wife was Nancy, and that she apparently died prior ro 1870.

However, the marriage to Mary Elizabeth Newton is also recorded (Kentucky Marriage records) on 9 Jul 1867. The 1870 census does not mention her. Which is at fault? The census file (or was she living somewhere else for some reason), or the marriage record (wrong date)?
