When searching for the blazon of arms for the Tadlock family, one needs to recall that the original (at least for the vast majority of Tadlock's researched) name was Tatlock. The name was changed shortly after arrival in America in 1702, first to Tatlock and then to Tadlock ... sometimes both at the same time. When exploring his (Edward Tatlocke) origins, we find what would not only would suffice for a generic Tadlock arms, but offer also a possible explanation for the name.
There was a Paul Tatlock of Ewell that was originally granted the arms for the family Tatlock(e). Further, his family and many others of that same were of the Lancashire (or Chester) area of England. Our Edward Tatlocke was also of the Lancashire region.
First ... the blazon of arms. The shield is azure (blue), a bend engrailed cotised or (basically, a diagonal line with wavy edged lines parallel to it in gold), in sinister chief (shield's top left) a dolphin argent (silver). The crest has a demi lion rampant or (small lion showing his claws in gold). A possible explanation for the features would include: Azure (blue) shield signifies Truth and Loyalty; the doplhin is an example of Charity and kind affection toward children ... an affectionate "fish" and fond of music ... also indicative of Swiftness, Diligence, and Family Love.
Second ... the name itself. I too have found many plausible explanations for the name, but the one that I prefer is that it is a toponymic name. That meaning a name that derives it's origin from a particular place name near which the original bearer lived or held land. Looking back to my comment about being from the Lancashire area, I found that in that area the name Tatlock/Tadlock comes to mean "one from Tatlock". This could be originally from a location known in olden times as Tata's lock (or enclosure).
But hey ... I'm sure there will a few others that have entirely different explanations for both. Those just happen to be the ones I elected to accept while I was searching and evaluating the limited bits of info there are.
Anyway ... hope this helps. Try using the Tatlocke surname in your search command for that site. I'm sure you will get a response much like I tried to describe above.
