POTEET-TACKETT TRAIN - MOUNTAIN MEADOWS MASSACRE
Posted by: LM Fancher (ID *****1304) Date: October 27, 2007 at 12:44:51

I would like to correspond with anyone interested in the history of the Poteet Train (aka the Poteet-Tackett Train) that was involved in the Mountain Meadows Massacre. These two families, along with the Jones Family, were all inter-realted through the Basham line. Levi Poteet, father of three of the boys who travelled to California and back through Texas, was married to Katherine Basham. The Tacketts are connected through this family. Unfortunately, when the Poteet Train got to Utah, they were determined to follow their original plan to look for gold and turned off the train near Cedar City Utah. Their Tackett and Jones cousins hooked up with the Fancher Train. Thus, the Poteets were spared the tragedy of the massacre. Anyone related to these Poteets, Bashams, Tackett or Jones family are welcome to contact me. The Mountain Meadows Association has begun - finally - to actually account for all the trains associated witht the MMM, correcting the myth of there only being one wagon train that was massacred in 1857. I descend from James Poteet and Edea Gore Poteet from Overton County TN. Lynn-Marie dixonmckeown@gmail.com
