Thomas Tackaberry, IR>MO>CA
Thomas Tackaberry, born in Ireland, was in the U.S. by March 25, 1839 when his daughter Martha was born in St. Louis. His birthdate is unknown. He married Mary ____, also a native of Ireland. According to the 1850 census, she was born about 1820.
Mary and four children are listed in the 1850 Census, in the 6th Ward, St. Louis City, MO, Aug. 27, 1850, in the household of Alfred Bradock, and English-born hack driver. (household #1251) The children were Martha, Nancy E. "Nannie," b. 1840, Benjamin, b. 1846, and George E., b. 1849.
Thomas left the family to go to California before the 1850 census was taken. He established a store in the Gold Rush town of Placerville, Eldorado County. The family joined him there later.
Thomas died March 4, 1857 in Placerville. There is no further record of Mary.
Martha, b. March 25, 1839, married John Hume in Placerville, Sept. 6, 1858.
In the 1860 census, Nancy Tackaberry, age 15, was living with sisterm Martha Hume and her family in Eldorado County. The other family members were not listed.
Martha's husband John Hume died in 1866, leaving her a widow at 27. By 1870 she had married a second time, to Wm. H. Ayers, a druggist who lived in Watsonville, Santa Cruz, CA. Living with them (1870 census) were Nannie Tackaberry, 25, a teacher and George E. TAckaberry, 21, apprentice to a printer.
Martha died July 24, 1895 in Stockton, San Joaquin County, CA, age 56.
