Jake, you are not barking up the wrong tree. This particular name has several variations, sometimes from father to sons. We even have an occasional 'l' show up in the middle of the name, which has sent me searching the wrong people in Michigan for almost 2 1/2 years. My husband's ggg grandparents were Nathan/Nathaniel Tackebury and Margaret Peterson. Their daughter Sarah married a Merrow, and their daughter Emma married the great grandfather Oren Pittenger. Oren had a niece Harriet who married Isaac Tackebury,,, who was a son of Nathan and Margaret.
Nathan and Margaret moved from Canada to Michigan abt 1870, and yet when I took him back to Canada, his father Anthony spelled it Tackaberry,,, maybe. When I found mention of their graves, it then was at least transcribed as Tackabary.
We are all new to this genealogy stuff in the beginning, so try not to get too discouraged. Sometimes it's easier to work your way back from yourself, rather than try to find the Ireland ancestors first, and work your way down.
Good luck,
Barb
