Hi Brian,
Thanks so much for all of this information! I find it truly fascinating. It's pretty amazing that your ggg grandfather housed Nathaniel & family upon their arrival to the area!
I remember also my father telling me that in Lions Head there were two general stores, one of which was owned by Ernie Tackaberry and one by the Hellyers, I believe. Half the town was strictly loyal to Ernie's and the other to Hellyers.
Is the Warder brick house the large Victorian home near the beach? I'm trying to place it...I'm not certain. I do remember my grandmother, Thelma Carter Ellis, saying that that house was the first to have electricity and that the entire village would come and watch the lights go on at night!
I also found a copy of your grandfather's book, Between You Me and the Gatepost. When I was very small, it was in my grandmother's summer house in Lions Head, and I do recall her showing me a picture of George Moore and saying, "He was a real big shot!"
I think Thomas Tackaberry married Ellen Hughes and moved to Owen Sound. I saw a post by one of his descendants through his daughter, Margaret Pearl Tackaberry.
In May, my grandmother died and was given a funeral in the church next to the stone Tackaberry house. She had been born there some ninety years before. She is now buried in the Lions Head cemetery.
In my cottage I have a trunk filled with some interesting documents; I believe I found a map of the area from the early days. I also found a whole packet of information on the Tackaberry line, tracing them back to when they were soldiers in William of Orange's army who decided to settle in beautiful Ireland. Next time I go up to Lions Head I will have to look through the trunk and share any interesting findings with you!
I think we can both be extremely proud of the hard work and bravery of our pioneer ancestors. I love Lions Head and the surrounding area for its beauty and the friendliness of its people, and I feel lucky to have roots there.
That link, also, is incredible--to see the names of so many direct relatives of mine!
Once again, thank you so much for taking the time to write to me and share such wonderful information about your family and mine!
Most sincerely,
Hilary Ellis
