Thomas Tackaberry
My ggg-grandfather, Thomas Tackaberry, appears in the 1850 census of Eldorado County, Cal., Placerville & vicinity, page 99 as Thomas Tuckaberry, 38, miner for gold, born in Ire. The enumerator noted that he was making an average of $1.50 in gold dust per day. Also in the household was Robert S. Orr, 27, no known relation, but also born in Ireland, also a miner.
Thomas had left his family in St. Louis -- they were enumerated in the census there. I cannot find his wife Mary in any later record. Daughter Martha joined him within a few years and married John Hume in Placerville, 1855. Daughter Nannie was living with Martha and John in 1860, but there is no sign of sons Benjamin or George until 1870, when George shows up in Martha's new household (she had remarried to William H. Ayers following John Hume's death).
I've posted most of this information before, but this is the first time I have found any record that suggests a date of birth for Thomas. If 38 in 1850, he was born in about 1812, and so must have emigrated sometime between the date of his birth and 1838, when his oldest child was born in Missouri.
I would love to correspond with anyone who can help me identify Thomas, or with anyone who may be related to his chidren Nannie, Ben or George.
