Rev. Joseph Tabor & Mary of St Louis, MO
Posted by: Linda Cox (ID *****9699) Date: January 27, 2009 at 14:22:17
  of 1613

Looking for information on the wife of Rev. Joseph Tabor;

Rebecca Lee, was born in 1817 in Ireland and subsequently married James Essex born 1811 in Kentucky - married in St. Louis.

Essex wrote an autobiographical account of his 1834 marriage to Rebecca Lee (“Glimpses of the Past”, Missouri Historical Society Journal 1:7, June 1934) in which he indicates their marriage was carried out by the Reverend Joseph “Tabor” at the house of Rebecca’s brother-in-law John Finney and that “Aunt Mary Tabor” was present.

(The Finney’s were from Cavan County, Ireland and played a pioneer role in development of the Methodist Church in Missouri.)

Three sisters bearing the name of Lee, and James C. Essex, were early additions to the society (Methodist Society, organized in 1821 in St Louis County, Jesse Walker preacher). The sisters became the wives respectively of John and William Finney and James Essex. (Encyclopedia of the History of Missouri by Howard Louis Conard, Haldeman, Conard & Co., 1901).

Mary Tabor was possibly a sister of Jane Kingston Lee and of Paul Kingston (my line).

Rev. Joseph Tabor, a local preacher, and a small number of the lay members, adherents of the northern branch, remained in the Methodist Episcopal Church, and erected their small church, which they significantly called Ebenezer Chapel; it traces its origin back to 1845 when Methodism became divided over the issue of slavery.

Any help would be appreciated,
