For your interest, I believe that the first time the name Symmes appears in U.S. History is about 1621, when a Rev. ? Symmes and his family arrived in Massachussetts with his family and onturage! Can't recall the Ship name, but it is one of the few that can be found transcribed on the Internet, in that time frame! For whatever Clues may come from this lead! I became interested in this surname because it is so close to that of Symmers which is found abundantly in Scotland and the British Isles, and it appears that the surname Simmers likely evolved from it!
