John Cleves Symmes (Jr) in Germany 1860s

Seeking information on John Cleves Symmes (Jr), born about 1825, son of John Cleves Symmes, the Hollow Earth theorist, and brother of Americus Symmes. Symmes Jr was in Germany in the 1860s, married to Marie or Maria Lepowitz (sp?); they had a young son nicknamed "Puddy" (don't know the son's name. Symmes Jr. at that time was convinced that he could successfully invent an anti-gravity flying machine. He also seems to have been having serious trouble with his marriage. Anyone know what happened to him?
