I am descended from John Taylor (b. 1696) who married Catherine Pendleton. I am quite certain that John Taylor survived his wife, dying in 1780 in Granville Co., NC. Therefore, his wife was not the Catherine who married William Sydnor. This John Taylor and Catherine Pendleton had a daughter Elizabeth (1733-1764) who married William Bullock and James B. Lewis (married December 25, 1752).
The facts concerning John Taylor, born 18 Nov. 1696 and his children are documented in an abstract of a bible record of the bible of John Taylor, son of James Taylor and Mary Gregory. This abstract was published in the William & Mary Quarterly, Series I, Vol. 12, 1903-1904. It gives the following details concerning the family of this John Taylor:
"The ages of myself and my wife and children are as follows:
John Taylor, son of James Taylor and Mary, his wife, was born November 18, 1696; died March 22, 1780.
Catherine Pendleton, daughter of Phillip Pendleton and Isabella, his wife, was born December 8, 1699, was married to John Taylor, February 14, 1716, and died July 26, 1774.
Mary, daughter of John and Catherine Taylor, was born May 30, 1718, and died September 13, 1757.
Catherine, daughter of John and Catherine Taylor, was born December 30, 1719, died November 4, 1774.
Ann, daughter of John and Catherine, was born May 10, 1721, and died August 10, 1761.
Edmund, son of John and Catherine, was born May 12, 1723.
Isabella, daughter of John and Catherine Taylor, was born June 26, 1725.
John, son of John and Catherine Taylor, was born July 17, 1727, and died October 26, 1787, between 5 & 6 o’clock a.m.
James, son of John and Catherine Taylor, was born Sep. 7, 1729, and died Sep. 26, 1750, age 21 years.
Phillip, son of John and Catherine Taylor, was born July 9, 1735.
William, son of John and Catherine Taylor, was born December 19, 1735; baptized January 18th; died November 5, 1803.
Joseph, son of John and Catherine Taylor, was born Feb. 19, 1742, at 10 o’clock in the morning, and baptized 20th of same month."
Accompanying the abstract of the bible record itself is the following letter:
"Waco Tex., March 20, 1902
Mr. Woodson T. White, Waco, Texas
DEAR SIR: This register was copied by me in 1870 from the old Bible formerly belonging to John Taylor, the son of the original James, of Carlisle, Eng. It was at the time the property of my great-aunt, Mrs. Mary Blackwell, formerly Mary Taylor, who was at that time a very old woman. She promised to give me the Bible in her will, but her residence at Bartlett, Tenn., was burned and the Bible destroyed. She was a sister of my grandfather, Joseph Taylor, and a sister of the Rev. Thomas Taylor, who died in Jackson, Tenn., in 1877, I think.
Joe W. Taylor"
There is a bible record at the Virginia State Library, which I call the Erasmus Taylor Bible. The digital image of this bible and an abstract of this bible can be viewed at the Virginia State Library website at:
You will need a VTLS-TIFF Viewer to view the digital image of the bible, which can be downloaded at:
There is no digital image of the cover of the bible but the abstract reports that the cover states the bible was printed in Manchester, England by Joseph Harrop in 1767 ("MDCCLXVII"). There are also loose notes included with this bible record which are from an unknown source and date and some of the information is subject to question.
The vital statistics included on the digital images of the actual bible pages for family information include the following information:
James Taylor "the elder" first wife’s name is not mentioned by her date of death is stated to have been 22 Sept. 1680. His second wife was Mary Gregory who he married on 10 Aug. 1682.
Children by his first wife were:
1. Jane was born the 27th December 1668
2. James was born the 14th March 1675
James the 2nd married Martha Thompson on 23 Feby. 1699 and died on Jany. 1730, aged 55. Their children were born between 1700-1715 in the following order: Frances, Martha, James, Zachary, George, Tabitha, Erasmus. The bible goes on to list vital statistics on the family of Erasmus Taylor.
3. Sarah was born the 30th June 1676
Children by Mary Gregory:
1. Ann was born the 12th January 1685
2. Mary was born 29th June 1688
3. Edmund was born 5 July 1690
4. John was born 18 Nov. 1696
James Taylor "the Elder" died 30th of April 1698
I have the Will of John Taylor (b. 1696) who died in 1780 in Granville Co., NC. The children and grandchildren mentioned leave no doubt that he is the John Taylor mentioned in the two above-mentioned bible records. The Will does not mention his wife, Catherine. I have a date of death for his wife, Catherine, as July 26, 1774, Orange Co., VA.
I consider myself an expert on the genealogy of the Madison of Colonial VA. Ambrose Madison who married Frances Taylor was the son of John Madison, Jr., and Isabella Minor (?Todd?) and grandson of the immigrant, John Maddison, who immigrated to York Co., VA, between 1645-1653. It is extremely unlikely that he was the son or otherwise related to Isaac Madison who died in VA about 1623.
John Madison, Jr., who married Isabella Minor (?Todd?) probably had the following five sons: John Madison, III, Henry, Thomas, Ambrose and Roger. The children of Thomas, Ambrose and Roger are well documented. The children of John Madison, III, are not documented. The information on the children of Henry Madison is incomplete. In 1734, John Madison, III, lived in Drysdale Parish, King & Queen Co., VA, and Henry Madison lived in St. John Parish, King William Co., VA. My best guess is that Sarah Madison who married John Pendleton was the daughter of John Madison, III. John Pendleton, her husband, lived in King & Queen Co., VA, before moving to Hanover Co., VA.
