John Swords, Sr. of SC

I have found several mistakes in Mr. George G. Morgan's recent column at Ancestry.com, concerning the Swords and Minton families. I have been researching these families since 1985, and have an extensive collection of copies of original records for them.

John Swords, Sr. didn't have a middle name. There are records showing that his son John did have a middle initial, S., and one indicating his middle name was Swancey. John Sr. did receive bounty land in Pendleton District for service in the Revolutionary War, but didn't actually move to Pendleton District until after the 1800 census, in which he was enumerated in York Co., SC. The records also show that the Swords family were Methodist.

John Sr.'s son William was born March 19, 1783, was a Justice of the Peace, but continued to live in SC until after 1840, he and his family are listed on the 1840 census of Anderson Co., SC pp.139B/140A- William Swords 50-60 [1780-1790], his mother Eleanor appears to be living with him. He is probably the Wm. Swords that is a buyer at an estate sale in Anderson Co. in 1849. The 1850 census of GA, Habersham Co., p.239 - 1st Dist. [which borders Oconee Co., SC] no.27 WILLIAM SWORDS 67 M b.SC [1783]. This certainly appears to be the son of John Sr.

I hope this shows the importance of having as much documented information as possible before jumping to any conclusions.
