Antique Family Bible Overhultzer/Rothget/Swope

I was looking through the family Bibles on Ebay and found this one listed. I copied what the seller had put up as a description because it had some family information. I am not sure if it can help someone, but hopefully it can.

Happy Hunting!

Jenny (I'm not the seller, just trying to help)

This auction is for 1 of 2 Bibles that I purchased during a 4 day auction at the Saint Mary of the Woods/Mary-of-the-Woods College. This is the oldest of the 2, dating to 1791 with a early piece of family history for the Engle Family early 1800's. The prices paid were amazing(high), but the alumnae that could attend were buying a piece of history. I was still able to purchase a few select items which I will be selling over the next several weeks. Set me as a favorite seller and watch for more great items.
This Bible is an incredible piece of history, over 200 years old, WOW!! I only wish that I could find a descendant of this family, as this bible would be a wonderful addition to their family history.
Engle family history is written toward the top of the last page of the Old Testament. What I could make out reads, 'Martin Engle was born January year of Our Lord one thousand eight and twenty three.'.
Then this same information was rewritten after 'The End of the Old Testament'. It appears to read, 'Martin Engle was born January of the 23th in year our of Lord one thousand eight and 24" '. I am not sure of the very end mark after the 24.
Next it is written, 'Elizabeath (Elizabeth ?) Engle was July the 8" in the year of Our Lord one eigth and 30"
Bosa (maybe Rosa) B. Bel Engle was born October of the 5th in the year of Our Lord one thousand eigth and fif??'
Simther delila Engle was born January the 20th in the year of Our Lord one thousand eigth and fifty three.'
I hope this helps as some of the script was hard to read, see picts.
This Bible does show wear, and is missing a few of the front pages, see picts. The pages are all tightly bound, but the book cover is no longer glued/attached to the pages.
The first front page in this Bible list the subscribers, starting with a tattered page that has the end of the 'J' and beginning of 'K' subscribers.
After the list of subscribers the following sections appear prior to the beginning of the Old Testament:
Admonition,
Letter from Pope Pius the Sixth, translated and reprinted and dated 1778.
A Prayer before the reading of any part of the Holy Scripture,
A Translation of the Decree of the Council of Trent, concerning the Canonical Scriptures.
Then the 'order of the Books' both Old and New Testament.
There is a title page at the beginning of the New Testament, which I am using to identify this Bible, see picts.
Prior to the title page is an engraving identified as, 'The Resurrection, engraved by H. Brocas, Published by richd. Crofs No. 28 Bridge Street Dublin'.
The title page reads,
'The New Testament of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
translated from the Latin Vulgat:
Diligently compared with the Original Greek:
and first published by
The English College at Rhemes, A.S. 1582.
with
Annotations, References, and an Hiftorical and Chronological Index.
The Fifth Edition.
Newly revised and corrected according to the Clementin Edition of the Scriptures.
Dublin
printed by Hugh Fitzpatrick,
for Richard Cross, No. 28, Bridge Street MDCCXCI'.
Lightly in pencil, underneath the roman numerals is the date 1791.
The overall size is approx, 11 1/2 by 10 inches and approx. 4 1/8 inches thick.
This Bible is considered in fair-good condition for it's age. The pages, except for a few from the front that are missing are all still tightly bound.
This Bible does not have an embossed cover, and I am not sure what the material is, but do not believe it to be leather. There is a numby feel to the green cover, and there are reinforcing triangles on the corners and on the bound end, see picts. The cover has protected these pages well, but has damage to the corners, and the bound end, see picts.
It looks like the Bible was left open to a specific page, and there is some wear in the center around the thread/string binding in this area, pages are not loose, see picts. There is the brown spots and edge wear that you would expect, see picts.
I'm not sure how many pages there are because there are some extra pages not counted. There are 998 page numbers in the Old Testament and 272 numbered pages in the New Testament.
This Bible is not perfect, there is the edge wear and cover wear that you would expect, see picts. I also did see a few pencil marks, but not considered significant. It is over 200 years old though and is considered in good condition for it's age.
This Bible does have Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Library labels. The uppermost label indicates that this might have come, to SMWC, from 'Fort Wayne Catholic Library Association'. There is a typed label that reads, 'Holy Bible Dublin, Printed by Hugh Fitzpatrick for Richard Cross - 1791 See title page for New Testament'. Finally there is a Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Library for REference 62486 Not to be Taken from this room', see picts. I will guarantee this Bible to be from this collection, and will include copies of newspaper articles about the sale with a small written statement indicating that I purchased it at the SMWC auction.
This is the oldest Bible I have ever seen. Whether used for a display, or to add to your book or Bible collection what a wonderful piece of Religious History.
