Where to start -- Kohler, Irminger

My great great great grandfather J. Michael Kohler apparently taught natural history at the University of Zurich and was deeply involved in the botantical gardens and horticulture. He edited horticultural journals for a number of years. I believe he was born in the early 1800s (perhaps 1810-1816). Later on, he was published on new techiques in wine making. He had a home with "beautiful" gardens on the lake. He died around 1884. His wife was Elizabeth "Lisette" Irminger (her father might have been a doctor) and she came to America around 1860 with her 1 year old son Paulus (known as Paul). They lived in Brooklyn, New York City. I don't know if the wife ever went back but the son stayed here and died in the early 1920s. I have exhausted all I know ... and don't know how to look for more. Searching in Switzerland is something new to me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
