Hi Larry,
Canton Bern is a big place, and unless you've more info not mentioned, the family name could originate in any of these communities:
Gyger BE Adelboden
Gyger BE Aeschlen
Gyger BE Eriz
Gyger BE Frutigen
Gyger BE Gampelen
Gyger BE Kandergrund
Gyger BE Kandersteg
Gyger BE Saanen
which are quite widespread from the Alps to the north-east.
