I am also a descendant of Joseph Siler/Seiler born c 1670 or 1680 in either Switzerland or Germany. I am a new member and live in Oregon, USA. My Dad Frederick Siler (passed away 4 1/2 years ago) spent many years researching our Siler family line. He actually travelled around and obtained info and pictures from old Siler Bibles, records, etc. back in the 80's and 90's. His research was done without the use of Internet. I have some of the family charts (need to get the rest from my Mother) that he compiled. This is what I have.
Info noted by my Dad "from the John Siler Family Bible in possession of Elbert Joan Siler Weston, MO": John Siler (my line) B 9 June 1783 Lancaster County PA Died 1 April 1847 Berkley Springs, West VA Married 20 March 1804 to Susannah Thompson B 1785 D 25 March 1863 Berkley Springs, West VA they had 8 children (a girl that died, Jacob, Bennet, Margaret, Philip, Elias (my line), Elizabeth, John Thompson).
ALL following info noted by my Dad "from Frederick Newbraugh of Berkeley Springs, West VA": John Siler B 9 June 1783 son of Jacob Siler B 19 March 1740 Lancaster County, PA Died ca 1804 Berkley County, West VA Married Esther. Jacob lists 9 children in his will (Andrew, Philip, Jacob Addison, John (my line), Esther, Hannah, Charity, Elizabeth, Molly or Mary).
Jacob Siler B 19 March 1740 is the son of Daniel Siler B 15 June 1708 Sembauch, Switzerland Daniel Siler Married Ann and they had 8 children (Catherine, John, Jacob (my line), Christian, Daniel, Julia, Mary, another Daniel (first son Daniel must have died). Daniel Siler B 15 June 1708 was in Frederick County, Maryland when he made his will in 1771.
Daniel Siler B 15 June 1708 is the son of Joseph Siler of Sembauch, Switzerland "probably a Palatine fugative from Rineland, Germany." Joseph's wife's name is not known. Joseph had 7 children (Ulrick, Daniel (my line) Hedwig, Jacob (your line), Gertrude, another Gertrude (first one must have died), and Johannes).
My Dad spent a lot of time trying to obtain records from Sembauch area but was told by the Swiss that they later lost that town and all its records (destroyed) to Germany. My Dad would then contact Germany only to be told that they did not take the Swiss vital/church records only the land. That it was common for the local preists to flee with the records. I do know that Siler was spelled many different ways Syler, Seiler, Ziler, etc. and that the name means "rope maker."
I would appreciate any additional information, and would love a photo copy of the old Joseph Seiler Bible. Do you have it in your possession? On my next trip to my Mother's I will make copies of all my Dad's Siler research.
It is hard to find someone on this website who is researching the same Siler line - most are researching a different lineage. I suggest that we have a different Siler line added to this website.
Yours truly,
