IMHOFF in Laufen, Ct. Berne, Switzerland
Would like to correspond with anyone researching the IMHOFFs in Laufen, Canton Berne, Switzerland (just west of Basel on the river Birse). I have traced my IMHOFF family back to Soyhieres (now in Canton Jura, just west of Laufen - also on the river Birse). The eldest generation (Turs IMHOFF -called le Saiget- a bleeder?) may have actually lived in Delemont (ca. 1650). A possible IMHOFF relative at the marriage of an IMHOFF ancestor is identified as a "Citizen of Laufen"; thus I would assume that the family line goes back to Laufen. I believe that my line may have left at about the time of the 30 Years War??
These IMHOFFs are Roman Catholic. ALTHOUGH!!! Laufen in Canton Basel (now Canton Berne), Switzerland, did 'turn' Protestant for a short time during the THIRTY YEARS WAR. I think it was that war that forced the emigration of my IMHOFF ancestor to Delemont - only about 20 miles up the Birse River Valley from Laufen. Delemont remained Catholic and was French speaking (now in the French-Catholic Canton of Jura). It is also where the Prince-Bishop of Basel went after he was deposed in the city of Basel (also Porrentruy - aka Pruntrut). The area that would become the Canton of Jura in 1979 was originally the major part of the remnants of what was called the Principality of the Prince-Bishop of Basel. Laufen was a part of it after the 30 Years War because it reverted to the Catholic faith, though still a German-speaking municipality.
Thanks .... Lynn
