Martin Switzer(1778-1852)married Mary Maurice (1779-1866)in 1803 and the following year, they left Navan, Count Meath, with their baby daughter Annabelle, on the ship "Atlantic" to America. They settled at Elizabethtown, New Jersey, then moved to New York and in 1819, Martin came to Canada, with a group led by John Beatty, where, in September, he got 100 acres by Crown Grant in Toronto Township on west half of Lot 11, Concession 5 West.
Martin was the son of John Switzer (1743-1794)and his second wife, Ann Ryan, of Newpark,Kilcooly, County Tipperary, Ireland. Martin had republican leanings and got involved in the Mackenzie Rebellion of 1837. Afterwards, he sold his property in Canada and moved to Kane County, Illinois. Several of Martin's siblings also emigrated to the Streetsville area on Upper Canada. This information is taken from "Tipperary Switzers" by Mrs. Mary Manning, Bruce B. Peel, and B. Wesley Switzer. I hope this is useful information for you. I am descended from one of Martin's half brothers, Joseph Switzer and his wife, Margaret Smeltzer.
