Hi Linda,
My mother was a Switzer born in Ontario, Canada. The Switzer family she is descended from came from Kilcooly area of County Tipperary in Ireland. The first one of the family to emigrate to North America was Martin Switzer in 1804. He went to New York City originally. He later moved to Canada in 1819 and took up land near Streetsville, near Toronto. Some of his brothers and their families were then attracted to this same area for settlement. Other Irish Palatine families settled in this area as well.
I think it is highly likely that your Switzer ancestors came from Ireland rather than England. As they were German speaking, the Palatines stayed together as a closeknit community where they were settled in Ireland on estates of Protestant landowners. This was a policy of the British government who wanted to move these Palatine refugees out of England where they were creating resentment among the local people.
A great deal of useful information on the Switzers and the Palatines is available from the Irish Palatine Association at www.irishpalatines.org.
