Hi Kristine,
Frank Marion Swisher was born in Iowa, not Illinois in 1854 (he listed Iowa as his place of birth on numerous census documents). In 1860 it appears that he was in Burrell, IA (Decatur County).
His father and mother were Allerson & Maria Swisher. His name in 1860 was listed as "Francis M. Swisher." He had 3 brothers: George W (the eldest), then Frank, then Aaron H. and then John, all of them children in 1860. Perry Swisher, my grandfather, remembered his grandfather, Frank, telling him of his older brother George.
Allerson Swisher listed his place of birth as Pennsylvania and his birth year as 1815 (Good luck in going beyond Allerson. The records stop cold with him).
Maria Swisher was born in Indiana around 1825. The Census officer, Mr. Bridges, listed her as being illiterate.
Neither Allerson nor Maria appear in the 1870 Census (in any state), which corroborates the belief that Frank's parents died in a diphtheria epidemic in St. Louis.
