Barbara, I may or may not be connected to this family.I am looking for information regarding my Swinney/Swinea family.Mary Swinea was born in Virginia in 1799.She wanted to marry William Flatt, and her father would not approve of the marriage. (William was older; born about 1781-85, and had been married before). She became pregnant, and moved to Roane County, Tennessee (not necessariy in that order; I don't know). She married William Flatt in Roane County in about 1819.They moved on to Giles County, Tennessee, where their son Solomon Flatt was born in 1820.Soon after that, they went to Hardin County, Tennessee, where they spent the rest of their lives.
I know that others of the Flatt family were in Hardin County, including brothers of William.I think there may have been Swinney connections there as well. Less than a mile from Old Union Cemetery, where Mary is buried, there is another cemetery called Swinney's Chapel.
William Flatt died in 1847, and Mary later married Moses Bailey. He was born in Virginia in 1797, and was murdered (hanged) by a gang of thugs calling themselves soldiers in 1864. In the 1850 census, there was one Catherine Swinea, twenty-five years older than Mary, in Moses and Mary's household.I believe she was Mary's mother.
Mary Swinea was my ggg grandmother. If you have any clues regarding this family, I would certainly appreciate hearing from you.
