Edith Mary Swindell died April 13, 2010 in her home on her 103rd Birthday. Born the daughter of J. Owen and Flora Taylor Patterson, she has lived in Barre all of her life. She has been the holder of the Boston Post Cane since 12/18/2004. Her husband, Edwin Swindell passed away in 1986. She is survived by daughters, June Ferguson of Petaluma, CA, Evelyn Mattox of Albany, OR; son, Robert of Barre; nine grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. After graduating from Fitchburg Normal School, Edith taught school until she married and became a devoted homemaker and mother. She enjoyed poetry, books, puzzles, games and gardening, especially gladiolas. Tea parties and Bible studies with friends, many of whom were school teachers, were among her favorite activities. She was much loved by all who knew her.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour on Friday, April 23, 2010 from 10-11:00 AM. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM in Pillsbury Funeral Home, 96 S. Barre Rd., Barre. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Gardner VNA Hospice Program, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440 or Barre Library Association, P.O. Box 731, Barre, MA 01005, attn: Edith Swindell Memorial Fund.
