John Sweet, Chautauqua County, NY

Hello, everyone!
I am new to this, but I'm stuck, so I thought I'd see if there was any help out there...

I've been researching great-great-grandfather's line. His name was George D. Sweet, and he married Ann Matson. His father was John Sweet, a blacksmith according to the 1860 census, and he married Julia Maria Carpenter in 1860. The census says he was born in NY, but I cannot find any information about where he came from in NY before 1860, when he resided in Harmony, Chautauqua County. Julia was evidently his second wife, as he had three children: Jerusha (1843), Washington (1845), and Jane (1847). His birth date is 4/15/1816, according to several websites. Does anyone know anything about this mystery man? Thanks so much...
Taryn
