re: John SWEET, son of Isaac & Mary; Notes of
According to the New England Genealogical Dictionary the first SWEET mentioned is Mary, widow of Isaac SWEET, who came from Wales, England, to America, in 1630 with her son John. John was living in Salem, Mass., in 1632, and on the 3rd of July of that year, his land is referred to as bordering Mr. Skelton's land on the north and near to Captain Endicott's. The name Sweet's Cove was given to an inlet near his residence.
June 6, 1634, John SWEET was presented to the Grand Jury for shooting a wolf-dog of Col. Endicott's in the yard of the latter, and was fined 5 lbs. Subsequently the fine was remitted. In 1637, John removed to Providence, Rhode Island with his wife Mary and probably their three children: John; James; and Meribah (Renewed), as their births are not recorded in Providence. In 1637 he had a grant of land here and died that year, 1637. After his death his widow, Mary, returned to Salem, Mass., and had a grant of land. In 1638 she married Ezekiel Holliman. She died Salem, Mass., 1681. Her will was proved July 31, of that year. In it she gave to son-in-law John GARARDY and daughter Renewed, his wife, both formerly of Warvwick, but then of Providence, R.I., all interest in houselot, meadow & upland in Warwick.
Note: After her mother, Mary (nee ?) Sweet married her second husband, Ezekiel Holliman in 1838, she changed the name of her Daughter Maribah to Renewed.
