Larsen descendant visits the South Pole with an Amundsen descendant & the PM of Norway!
Are you missing a Larsen great or great-great granduncle (c1880-1889)?
Ernst Hans Larsen would have been proud to know that his great-grandson (our son Timothy) was at the South Pole on the 100th anniversary of Amundsen’s successful trip to the South Pole (2012). We have a picture of him with Jens Stoltenberg PM of Norway & Hans Kristian Amundsen a descendant of Roald Amundsen.
Looking for the family of my wife's grandfather-Ernst Hans Larsen (went by Hans in the family) born about March 6, 1889. We figure that he knew the day and month he was born but the year may be off.
One summer (circa 1901) he jumped on the Latvian ship "Roma" out of Riga, Latvia starting off as a cabin boy. He eventually became an able body seaman. In his writings he stated he had 8 brothers and each summer he used to take the ferry to Riga to work on his uncle’s nursery (Name not known, perhaps: Albert? Walden/Wahlden? or Larsen?). His uncle was also his Godfather. His death certificate issued in California states his mother was Christine and his father was Hans. Family lore had stated his father name was Johan/Johannes and his mother was Mary/Maren/Mari/Maria (Wahlden/Walden?). But we are not really sure of his parent’s names.
Most everything we know of Ernst is based upon the recollections of a young man at the time he left home at about 12-14 years of age, never to communicate with his family again. In his handwritten autobiography written just before he died in 1956, he states that he is Norwegian. He entered the USA in San Francisco, California on the Ship “FM Slade” on February 22, 1911 as per the ship’s manifest. It’s interesting to note that this document states that his nationality is Russian and that he was 24years old in Feb 1911. That makes his birth date 1886. However his US Naturalization certificate, the 1920 & 1930 US census all state that his name is Earnest, born c1889 & that he is Norwegian. We have not found his name, etc in the 1900 Norwegian census. His writings make us believe that he spent 8-10 years at sea. Ernst moved on to raise a family and become a chef at some of California's finest hotels.
We are beginning to believe that he may be of Norwegian parents but that he may have been born in Sweden, Finland or perhaps Denmark.
