Good job solving that mystery! Research does take a while, but if you keep checking various sources, you will gather a lot of clues and eventually will find what you need.

I suspected that you had seen the 1900 census but we needed the information from that census about the month and year of birth, and so forth. ;-) We can do a better job of searching with all the clues, not just some of them.

Children were considered adults after their confirmation at about age 15. Many emigrated without parents at earlier ages than 17.

Marie and Mary are unlikely in Sweden. She was probably Maria or perhaps Maja, a variation of Maria. She probably Americanized her name to Mary.

Look for the marriage APPLICATION (which is not the same as the marriage certificate). Also use (as I've said a lot of times) the Swenson Center.

What is the source of the name Sundström? (It is possible and perhaps likely that she left Sweden using just her patronymic name and only later used a surname such as Sundström.)

You can obtain a free booklet with an overview of Swedish genealogy, plus ideas on how to gather more clues. The following url has a link to downloading the free booklet and also a link to ordering the booklet to be sent by mail (also for free). The booklet comes very quickly, so it is better than using up a lot of ink and paper copying the download.

Birth certificates for the children may list their mother's maiden name.

Social Security APPLICATIONS for those children found on the Social Security Death Index should provide the names of parents, including the mother's maiden name. (They are $27, which is expensive, but they are really helpful. My dad came from a big family. I ordered all his siblings' records as well as his. All except one named their mother as Signe Ekman but one uncle named her as Signe Cecilia Elisabeth Ekman. That full given name helped me find her in Swedish records. Before ordering the applications, I only knew she was Signe but I didn't know her maiden name.)

This is my favorite site for checking the Social Security Death Index. I like the Advanced Search. This is just an index. You need to order the application to get the best information.
