Abigail Swartwood & James Brown-Portsmouth, OH-1854

I am seeking information on a Charles Marion Brown, son of James Louis Brown and Abigail J. Swartwood Brown, who lived at Alvarado, Johnson Co, Texas from about 1880 to after 1910. Accoding to an record posted by John Brown under the now defunct email address, Abigail was from Ohio, and James was from Kentucky. They were married in Portsmouth Co., OH in 1873 and lived for a time in Carter Co., Kentucky before moving to Texas. They apparently lived in Bell Co., Texas before moving to Johnson Co.

I suspect that their son Charles Marion Brown may be my great-grandfather via my great-grandmother Emma Lucinda Johnson who lived in Alvarado in the early 1890s with her parents William M. and Elizabeth Johnson. I have found no marriage record for Emma and a Charley in Johnson Co, and the subsequent behavior of the family seems to indicate that they were never married.

According to Emma's elderly sister in an interview about 1970, my great-grandfather was "Charley Baker"; but in a genealogy of the Arrington family into which Emma later married she was listed as Emma Brown Johnson. I am assuming that Emma's sister might have confused the two names. I have found no Charley Bakers at Alvarado at that time, but I do find a Charley Brown in the 1900 census, age 26 and single. The Browns lived at Alvarado in 1893 about the time Emma lived there.

I have posted a photograph of Charley Baker/Brown at If you know this particular Brown/Swartwood family and have any photographs of them, I would appreciate your examining this photograph and letting me know if there are any family resemblances. I would also appreciate any information you may have on Charles Brown and his parents and their fate.
