Hi. My grandmothers maiden name was Jebb, her father was born in Ireland c1849 and was in the British military until about 1885. I have a good deal of information about the Jebb families in general; thanks to Graeme Jebb in Australia. I think that I can tie my G G Grandfather William Jebb in with that early documentation regarding Ireland. William was a Solicitor in Dublin & possibly under the wing of Robert Jebb Barrister in mid 19thc as they were both practicing there at that time.

My interest is in the Granddaughter of Hilaire Belloc, Marianne Jebb who became Sister Emmanuel Mary of the Cannonesses of St. Augustine, Ramsgate, Kent.
My brother lives approx one hundred meters from the building and opposite the houses in which the children at the School were housed; including, I gather, several of the Belloc children.

I have traced a Jebb presence in that part of Kent called Thanet from a marriage in 1713 of one William Jebb & know that my Great Uncle lived in Margate which is very close to Ramsgate, for some forty years. I have quite a few names and locations of the early Jebbs in Kent over a three hundred year period and also some Dublin connections re: Hamilton, Gibson & Guinness.

Although I do not live in Thanet, as does my brother & which which was quite by accident, we were born & bred in Chatham, Kent which is also the birthplace of several of Sir Joshua Jebb's children as well as the death place of my maternal G.Grandfather James Gibson Jebb.

My Uncle John, who is now seventy eight years of age, has lived for the last thirty odd years but three miles from Downton which was the last residence of Ralph Gladwyn Jebb in Britain, also, purely by chance. The daughter of a family friend (of political persuasion) from Chatham was living with Ralphs mother in the 1901 census in Suffolk.

It appears that this lady's father, who was an Alderman in Chatham, may have arranged a job for my G Grandfather in the Tax Office of the newly built Town Hall, as they arrived in the Town as at the time that it was inaugurated. I have a book which was published locally to celebrate the opening. In another Directory I have the Aldermans wife Chair of a Labour help group!

Quite coincidentally I was the Director of that same magnificent building for some years when it was turned into a Theatre and Arts Centre in the 1980's & 90's. Looking at the plans it is quite likely that my office was the old Tax Office!

My mother was born outside of Greenwich in 1926 not far really from the Gladwyn Jebb ancestral home. I have reason to believe that her mother was staying at that time with a family named Mosely which also fits in with the overall Jebb heirarchy! My mothers adoptive family were staunch Labour' her adoptive father was something quite high up in the Trade Union re: Dockyards & ship building Workers. I can remember that the name MOSELEY was endlessly daubed across the wall opposite that house for years: always re painted when covered over.

So these are a few coincidences that have led me to my opinions, but briefly to finish, I believe from documentation, that my Uncle John was sent to St. Augustines (Manston in the records) on at least two occasions during the early 1930's, which is when Marianne would have been there as a young student (I hope that my information is right). I know this is garbled but hope that it may be of interest to you and that you may be able to shed light on some connection here.

I thank you for your indulgence. Regards - Ann
