I have hit a brick wall tracing my Swanton & Holme families back further than the birth of their son, Horace Leigh Holme who was born in Walworth, Surrey, England on the 3 August 1863. His siblings names are as follows: Cecil HOLME Ralph HOLME Eleanor Maud HOLME Lilian HOLME Horace Leigh Holme came out to South Africa, married here and had three children, all of whom he gave the second name of Swanton, thus my grandmother was named Jessie Swanton HOLME. The reason was, according to family legend, that another member of the Swanton family inherited the estate or whatever and that it should have gone to my family! According to my grandmothers brother an agent came out to South Africa during the first world war and tried to get the family here to sign away any claim to the estate. The reason for this was that the eldest son was in the trenches and they didn't know if he would survive, which would mean that my family would have been able to claim the estate or whatever! Obviously this is family legend and may be totally untrue - on the other hand it may provide a clue to the family. Another clue is that the Huddlestone family is related but I don't know how. If anyone recognises anything or can help to clarify the situation - please contact me. Regards Conrod Mercer
