John and two of his sons died during the Civil War. John and one of the sons were killed by outlaws while returning home at the end of the war.
Hey Alvin , Not wishing to ? your info , you know more than me about the swangers. HOWEVER , Why do I have a copy of John Swanger's service records. That says :enislted 18 june 1861 as a blacksmith at age 37. ServedA CO 2nd cav reg nc . discharged disabbility on 23 oct 1861 to work in the armory in Asheville NC.
Source: nc troops 1861-65,A roster
As you can see this was way before the end of the war.
Also the movie protrayed the Swangers as deserters. If the guy who wrote the book comes back to Haywood Co , there are a few Swangers who would like to have a wordwith him.
On a very sad note .One of the Inman boys , age 16 , died last saturday night in a truck wreck on cold mountain.
Please think of the Inman family in your prayers.
