Freedmen Contracts:Yazoo & Laderdale,MS
Posted by: Bernard Swan (ID *****6073) Date: July 08, 2008 at 10:44:35
  of 1842

Search for information about my ancestors has been moving forward. Reviewing LDS film revealed that ...

a) David Swan (my great uncle or great great grandfather) had signed a Freedmen Agreement on February 5th 1866. The contract ranged from Feb 5,1866 to Dec 31 1866. The agreement was between Wilson Henderson (Henderson Plantation) and David Swan and another african american David White. They both worked for 50 cents/day. Info- FHL film#1616489

b) In 1870, Census reveals David Swan was living in Yazoo
County with my great grandfather (Wash Swan)and future
wife (Ella Sledge). Freedmen Contract signed April 16th
1870 between Freedmen Homes & Swan(n)and W.H. Hord to
pick Lint Cotton on the M. Picketts Home Place. FHL
film 885140

c)African American from Richard Swan listed on Registration for World War 1, that he was born in July 15 1873 and had relatives in Yazoo,MS. He registered in Bolivar County,MS

What this could mean is ...
1) Have Swan relatives around Lauderdale and Bolivar
Counties in Mississippi that I did not previously know
existed.
2) Lauderdale County is closer to Alabama than Yazoo
County and puts me closer to proving where in Alabama
(my branch of)African American Swan's came.

P.S.-Any additional information would help..
