Obama and Suttons of Rushton Spencer

Having had some queries about the Suttons etc and Rushton Spencer, Staffordshire, together with American research linking President Obama genetically to the area , I looked up info’ I had previously collected. Richard Eltonhead’s wife, Ann Sutton, was the younger sister of Alice, who married John Yardley (or Eardley) of Audley in 1601. My interest is there, together with the latter’s grandson William Yardley of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Their father Edward Sutton, alive as late as 1617, had at least one brother Edmund (with son William), who was involved in land disputes with him in 1608/9. Edmund resided at Cheddleton some 9 miles away, where he died 1613 (probate will). There was also at least one sister Margaret, who married Henry Latham of Mosborough, Lancashire, near Ormskirk.
Edward’s father appears to be Ralph, referred to in 1550 as heir to his father, in a letter by the widowed mother, Isobel. Ralph’s brother James is living at Shellesley, Lancashire in the same year. A James Sutton marries an Isobel Prescot that year.
The 1532 listing of the Archdeaconry of Stafford shows James and Isobel Sutton at their Rushton Hall, across from the ancient church, and very near the old megalithic monument. Their children are John, Ralph, Catherine, Margaret, Ellen, Agnes, Thomas and James. There is another large Sutton family in the parish in the same lists. James’s brother, Richard (died 1547), had moved across the ridges some 9 miles east to Endon, where the Elizabethan “Sutton house” is attributed to him. References to the Sutton landholdings in the Rushton area go back to 1300’s, as I mentioned last year. The assumption is that the family originate from Sutton in Lane Ends, some 5 miles north of Rushton. This links them to the founder of Brasenose College, Oxford, in early 1500’s – Richard Sutton.
The Suttons are strongly connected to the Stanleys of Lancashire, especially the most powerful member, the Earl of Derby. These Stanleys originate from within a mile of Endon. It is through Anne Stanley, Edward’s wife from 1576, that the family go back to William, the brother of King Richard Lionheart (1189 – 1199). King Richard is best known for his being leader of the Third Crusade to retake Jerusalem from the Saracens under Saladin. He spent most of his reign fighting in France, where his landholdings wee greater than the Kings of France.
Their younger daughter, Ann Eltonhead, is the renowned mother of five daughters sent to the American colonies in 1640’s who are ancestors to many noted Americans. The research of the New England Historical society shows Obama’s maternal link to at least the Conway family (Martha Sutton Eltonhead). So I have my links to both and show connection to Yardleys and Obama.
Bye pete
