Edward Sutton & Susannah Swain - Ireland to Canada

Edward Sutton
       1.       Edward Sutton was born in 1780 in Wexford Country, Ireland. He died on 1 Aug 1839 in Cavan County, Ontario.

Notes: Edward was a native of Enniscorthy, County Wexford in the south of Ireland. His ancestors came from
Yorkshire, England. They were sent to Ireland by Lord Mountnorris who received a grant of land in
Wexford and transferred his best tenant farmer to Ireland. Edward married Susannah Swain (b. 1785) in
Ireland. She was of the Danish race and had a tradition that her people were descendants of Sweyn, King
of Denmark. There are still many people of Danish extraction living in Wexford, Ireland. Susannah Swain
had a sister married to a Dundas and a brother who went by the name of Dane Swain. They sailed
aboard the Brig Robert Nelson landing in Quebec on July 28, 1821(1820). Edward and Susannah settled
on the SE 1/4 Lot 8 Con 7 in Cavan Township, Ontario. "The oldest Sutton known in Canada was Edward
Sutton and he is buried in a cemetery near the village of Caven and ...Ida... These small villages are
merely post offices and they are about 10 miles from Peterborough, Ontario.


Edward married Susannah Swain about 1794 in Wexford Country, Ireland. Susannah was born in 1785 in Wexford Country, Ireland. She died in Cavan Twp, Durham Co., Ontario. She was buried in Near village of Cavan, Ontario.

They had the following children:

       2       M       i.       Richard Sutton was born in 1794 in Coslandel, Wexford County, Ireland. He died on 24 May 1874 in Cavan County, Ontario. He was buried in 1874 in 9th Line Cemetery, Kawartha Branch, Ont.

Richard and Susannah travelled aboard the Brig Robert Nelson landing in Quebec on July 28, 1821. Richard & Susannah settled on SW 1/4 Section Lot 7 Con 7, Cavan Township, Ontario.


Richard married (1) Susannah Sterne on 1 Mar 1820 in St. Fiaac's Church, Clonegal, Wexford Co, Ireland. Susannah was born on 30 Dec 1799 in Co. Carlow, Ireland. She died on 3 Jan 1863 in Cavan County, Ontario. She was buried in 9th Line Cemetery - Cavan, on.

Susannah's family also came from Wexford. The Sternes settled near Brantford and one being a prominent chemist founded a firm which manufactured roofing and waterproof cement.


Richard married (2) Celia (Craig) Sheidow in 1864 in Cavan County, Ontario. Celia was born in 1805 in Ontario. She died on 19 Feb 1887 in Cavan Township, Durham Co. Ontario. She was buried in 9th Line Cemetery - Cavan, on.

Edward married Jane Carr daughter of James Carr and Ann "Nancy' Staples in 1826 in Ontario. Jane was born in 1805 in Wexford County, Ireland. She died in 1866 in Cavan Twp, Canada West.

       4       M       iii.       James Sutton 1,2 was born in 1810 in Wexford Country, Ireland. He died on 18 Jan 1885 in Manvers Township, Ontario.

James married (1) Alice Amelia Eyres daughter of Robert Eyres and Sara Bryan on 16 Oct 1829 in Douro, Ontario. Alice was born about 1800 in Ballingarry Townland, Kilnahue Parish,County Wexford, Ireland. She died about 1860 in Manvers Twp, Victoria Co., Ontario. Source: The Eyres Family Album

James married (2) Jemimah Mitchell . Jemimah was born on 14 Mar 1829 in Ontario, Canada.

       5       M       iv.       Robert W. Sutton 3 was born about 1810 in Wexford Co, Ireland. He died about 1900 in Cavan Twp, Durham Co., Ontario.

'In a genealogy put together on the McNeil family by Phyllis Collins, I have the following reference: Robert Sutton b. c1811, m. 1831 Mary (Molly) Emerson 1811 -

Robert married Marg Mary Emmerson 4 daughter of Matthew Emmerson and Mary Ann Gardner on 26 Jan 1831 in Twnp of Cavan, Ontario, Canada. Marg was born on 9 Jan 1811 in Weredale, Durham, England. She died in 1907 in Cavan Twp, Durham Co., Ontario.

       6       M       v.       John Sutton 5 was born in 1812 in Wexford Country, Ireland. He died in 1887 in Cavan Twp, on. He was buried in 9th Line Cemetery - Cavan, on.
John married Anne Dundas 6 in 1841. Anne was born in 1815. She died in 1892 in Cavan Twp, on. She was buried in 9th Line Cemetery - Cavan, on.

       7       F       vi.       Anne Sutton was born about 1814 in Wexford Country, Ireland. She died in Ontario.

       8       F       vii.       Susannah Sutton 7 was born on 10 Jan 1814 in Wexford Country, Ireland. She died on 17 Oct 1904 in Victoria County, Manvers Township, Ontario. She was buried in Mount Vernon Episcopal Cemetery, Darlington Twp, Durham Co. Ontario. Graham Methodist Cemetery: Kawartha Region - Victoria County, Manvers Township -
NW corner of Kawartha Rd. #32 & Highway 7A - just west of the village of Bethany: 'In Loving Remembrance of Susannah, his wife died Oct. 17, 1904 - aged 90 yrs. & 6 mo."

Susannah married Archibald Wilson Dr. 8 on 28 Mar 1837 in Cavan Twp, Durham Co., Ontario. Archibald was born in 1808 in Ireland. He died on 19 Feb 1899 in Victoria County, Manvers Township, Ontario. He was buried in Graham Methodist Cemetery, Manvers Twp, Ontario.

Susannah & Archibald Wilson settled in Mavers, Durham East, Ontario Graham Methodist Cemetery: Kawartha Region - Victoria County, Manvers Township - NW corner of Kawartha Rd. #32 & Highway 7A - just west of the village of Bethany " In Memory of Archibald Wilson died Feb'y 19, 1899 - aged 90 yrs. & 10 mo."

       9       F       viii.       Margaret Sutton was born on 12 Jul 1816 in Wexford Country, Ireland. She died in 1914 in Verulam Township, Ontario. Age as per 1851 Census Manvers


Margaret married Thomas "Little Tommy" Staples Esq. 9 son of Richard Staples and Elizabeth Swain on 18 May 1839 in Cavan Twp, Durham Co, Ontario. Thomas was born on 12 Feb 1816 in Wexford Co.,Ireland. He died in 1885.
