John Sutherland was a lawyer in Ripley, Lauderdale Co Tn in the 1850 and 1860 census. According to census records he was born in Kentucky about 1825 or 1826. His estate was valued at $24,ooo in 1860. he married Sallie Cherry, daughter of Norman Turner Cherry and Sarah Amanda Clay, on Jan 16, 1861 and a son, John Jr was born Oct 17, 1861. When the Civil War began he was named captain of Co. G of the 4th Tn Infantry and he was killed in battle at Shiloh, Tn on April 6, 1862. his widow remarried after the war to a veteran, Frank M. Sinclair, in 1867. Sinclair killed himself in Lauderdale Co Oct 1879 and the family relocated to California to live with relatives. I do not know when Sallie died but John Sutherland Jr married Mary Kincaid Manly of Kansas in Oct 1890. John Jr ran a vineyard in Fresno in the 1900 census and was in San Jose in the 1910 and 1920 censuses. He died Sept 6, 1923 in San Jose and his widow mary Apr 3, 1956 in Hayward, Cal. I hope this info is of use to other researchers. Richard Wilkinson, Amory, Ms e-mail
