In the 70's I did some considerable research on the Sutherlands. I found in the Archives in Frankfort, Ky a book called "The Family Tree of Henry Clay Sutherland Jr of Crown Point, Indiana." It was a wealth of information for me, and I have since verified and added to this info. Following is a narrative by Henry Clay Sutherland Jr:
My father always told me that the Sutherlands were descended from 3 brothers who came to America at an early age. Mr Robert W Sutherland, still living in Charles Co, Maryland, says "he was always told of 3 brothers who came to Virginia away back. One stayed there and one came to Maryland and the 3rd went to North Carolina." Mrs A S Wooten, deceased, of Mount Olives, North Carolina, "says that in 1684, Robert Southerland, 1 of 3 brothers, came to America from Aberdeen, Scotland in the Earl of Perth's New Jersey Expedition. Because of ill winds, landed in Virginia. Robert settled where Richmond now stands. His brothers went north on foot with a large company." Due to the above traditions, I am assuming that Robert Southerland's 2 brothers never made any farther north than Charles Co, Maryland and that 1 of the 2 brothers is my immigrant ancestor.-----Henry Clay Sutherland, Jr.
This book was published in 1968. If Henry Clay Jr is still alive, he would be about 85 years old.Bill Kaenzig
P.S. Perhaps David is the name of the 3rd brother.
