John Suter was born 1820 in KY, the oldest of nine children. Youngest was William Harl (b. 1832), seven sisters inbetween. All born in KY, except Wm Harl, who was born in Paris, IL. Known sisters were: Sarah/Sally m. Elisha Lawson; Nancy m. Joseph Marlin; and Catherine m. Robert H. Dean/Deen. Fourth sister might have been named Drucilla.
John often went by John Suter Jr.
He became a member of the Lick Branch Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Barren Co., KY, in 1833. Drucilla Suiter and several Deans also were members.
He married Agnes Dean 1846 Barren Co., KY, and they moved to Scott Co., IL, shortly after. Seven children born from abt. 1846 to 1859: Catherine "Kate," Madison P., John Martin, Mary Agnes, Thomas W., Elisha Allen (my ggrandfather), and James R. Both parents apparently were gone from household by 1867, and minor children were taken in by the Lawson and Hayes families.
Catherine E. Dean was living with John & Agnes Suter in Scott Co., IL, according to the 1850 census. Her birthplace was Germany. Age difficult to read, but looks like 56, meaning she would have been born abt. 1894. This was likely Agnes' mother, whose former surname was Suter.
This has been a difficult family to research. Many given names are same as other Suter/Suiter lines from VA, TN and NC, but I have been unable to connect my John Jr. to his parents and other siblings.
Are his parents John Suter and Mary McVay, who were married 1814 in Barren Co., KY? Were children born before John Jr? Is this the John Suter family found in the 1820 census of Warren Co., KY. If so, John Jr. had two older sisters. How is Catherine E. Suter Dean related to John Jr., in addition to being his mother-in-law?
Hope someone can help. Will be happy to share what I know.
