I ran across a site which has a reference to a William John Surman Gurney. The site is about a Christ Church school and rules/regulations are explained in great detail on the page http://www.chch.ox.ac.uk/student/bluebook.htm#1.A%20CHRIST . - Under item #10, about a third of the way down, is this comment on William John Surman Gurney. "William Gurney Travel Prizes: William John Surman Gurney, former Commoner of the House who matriculated in 1935, made a benefaction in 1985 from which Gurney Travel Prizes are awarded. The prizes are for travel for academic or cultural purposes in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and South America. The prizes (of up to L1000) are awarded in Trinity Term each year. Members of Christ Church reading for an Honour School are eligible for prizes in the Long Vacation before they sit Final Schools. Information about how to apply for the prize will be posted in Hilary Term each year." - I don't believe there is any other reference to William John Surman Gurney on the page.
