The abbreviation col'd does mean colored.
The acronym USCT mentioned in the original post means United States Colored Troops.
These units had black enlisted officers, and white officers.Not until the very end of the war, did the Federal government begin commissioning blacks as officers.
You should get a good idea of the race from the rank on the service record index.
