Here is all the information I have on the two Summeys who came to Alabama in 1820 to obtain a land grant.Some of this information conflicts with that in Lori's oringal post.I hope it does not further confuse the situation, but I will include references to my raw data so the reader can draw his or her own conclusions about reliability:
According to the "Alabama Record", Vol. 180, p.63 by Gandrud, Peter W. Summey was born in Lincoln or Rowan County, NC on Oct. 31, 1792 and died in Greene County, AL on July 7, 1835.He is buried in the Newer Cemetary in Greensboro (now Hale County), AL.I have pictures of his grave.I have been unable to confirm his father, though many believe he was the son of Hans peter, Jr. and Maryana Mirtz.Certainly, he travelled to AL with their grandson Jacob (son of Frederick and Blandina Summey) and might have been an uncle.
Peter W. Summey was married twice.His first wife was Catherine Hoke (or possibly Hope).ACcording to The Alabama Record, Vol. 180, p. 63 and "The Alabama Blue Book & Social Register", 1929, p.95, their children were as follows:
Elizabeth B. m. John Elliott on Nov. 22, 1836
Susan Katherinem. George Rogers Elliott on May 18, 1837
Elizabeth A.m. George Washington Wilborn on March 11, 1841
Barbara A. (aka Barbary or Susan)m. William J. Ryan on August 31, 1843.
According to "Marriage and Death Notices from the Western North Carolinaian" 1820-1842, compiled by Robt. M Tompkins, CAtherine Hoke died on September 17, 1825 in Lincoln County, NC.
According to the Alabama Record, Vol 108, pgs. 56-59, Peter's second wife was Margaret Camack, b. Nov. 15, 1804.They were married on May 15, 1827 in Greene Co., AL and had 4 children:
Nancy Harriet (see Ala. Rec. Vol. 22, p. 16) b. March 7, 1828, m. Newton Marley on March 22, 1842;
Permelia (aka Pamila)Jane b. Sept. 8, 1829, m. James Ezell on Aug. 14, 1845;
Dr. Frederick C. b. April 15, 1831, m. Sophronia Day.
Mary M. b. June 29, 1832, m. Robert W. Woods on Nov. 13, 1850.
Margaret Camack was the daughter of Irish Immegrants James(b.May 8, 1780, d. March 29, 1840) and Nancy (Hutchinson Camack who settled in the Fairfield district of S.C.In 1835, they moved to Jasper, AL where they operated a tavern called the "Camack and Ryan Hotel. Margaret was married again on Jan. 31, 1839 to John M. C. Walker in Greene Co.,AL.
Peter W. came to Al with Jacob Summey who was the son of Frederick Summey adn Blandina Weidner.Jacob was married on 12-24-1822 to Lenna (aka Liney or Lincy) Norris in Lincoln or Tryon Co. , NC with Jacob Ramseur as their bondsman.Accordning to The Alabama Record, Vol 20, p.44, Jacob's will was dated April 25, 1845 and was probated on Dec. 11, 1848.In the will, he mentions his wife, Liney, his "aged mother", the Children of Peter Summey, dec., the children of sisters Catherine, Elizabeth and Sarah and to his sisters Ann and Susan.From this disposition, we surmise that he never had children.It is not clear whether Peter is his brother or not. On Jan. 8, 1838, Jacob filed an accounting as guardian of Peter's children, Sarah C., Ann Elizabeth and Barbary S. Summey.
Jacob Summey was the son of Frederick Summey and Blandina Weidner.Frederick was born in Lancaster Co., PA in 1752.Most family geneologist say he was the son of Hans Peter, Jr., however in "The Sumi, Summy, Summa Family" by Bish (unpublished), he is listed as the son of Johannes Sumi (son of Hans Peter, Sr.).
The children of Frederick Summey and Blandina Weidner were as follows:
Katherine, b. 1783, m. Rev. Jacob Hoyle on May 9, 1803.
Jacob m. Lenna Norris
Annem. Solomon Hoyle on Jan. 14, 1814
Susan(could be the Susannah Summey who m. John Ramsour, Jr. on 12-17-1813?)
Sarah (could be the "Sally" Summey who m. Phillip Ramsour on 4-26-1808 with Jacob Summey as Bondsman?)
Elizabeth m. "Tanner" David Ramsour, III on 7-20-1803
Some of the above information was taken from "Geneology of Peiter Heyl adn his decendants", p.64.
We know of no other children of Frederick and Blandina, however, the 1790 census for Lincoln Co., NC lists 5 females and 2 males in the household of Frederick Summi. The other male might have been Peter.
One FINAL couple of bits of info:
Peter's son Dr. Frederick C. Summey m. Sophronia Day, daughter of Ransom day of Greene Co., AL.They had one son, Rufus Camack DAy who was b. July 25, 1862 and died three months later.They are all buried in the Newer Cemetary in Greensboro, AL.
Peter's daughter Sarah married George Rogers Elliott.they had a son named Joseph Alexander Elloitt who had a son named Edgar Meador Elliott who was prominent in Real Estate in Alabama. His decendants Edgar M. Elliott, Jr., III AND the IV were all attorneys.Edgar M. Elliott III and IV both still practice in Birmingham, AL.
I know this exhaustive.I hope it helps some out there.
