Hi, I was so excited to read the postings regarding Chief Summerfield. My Great Grandmother is Sarah Rebecca Bailey, daughter of Lucinda Mullins and Andrew Jackson Bailey.
In the very early 1900's Sarah tried to be included in the payout to the Cherokee Nation. She provided information to the agents and sorry to say, we do not know what was included in the information she provided to the Indian agents.I do have a couple of letters from the agency stating that they could not find the family listed on the Dawes Cherokee Roll and was it possible that her ancestors were captives or slaves to the Cherokees. They did not say she wasn't indian. (She sure looked like an indian matriarch as did my Nanny and Mother.)
The information you have provided sure explains a lot.If Chief Summerfield is the English name for Chief Powhattan, then he is not Cherokee but Algonquin. The Algonquins were from the lower part of what is Canada, but they actually went all the way down to Virginia.
Please contact me regarding this information. This part of the family is almost gone now.Lucinda's five grand children from Sarah Rebecca Bailey are all gone.My mother and her brother are still alive. My sister, myself and six cousins in Texas are all that's left from Sarah.
