Darby, b. bef. 1675, d. 1717, Calvert County, MD
A Darby Sullivan (a/k/a Sullivant and Swillavant) was living in Calvert County, Maryland as early as 1696, when he was one of two appraisers of the intestate estate of a Richard Bowin (a/k/a Bowen). In November 1708, Darby, along with a Patrick Dew and an Ann Dew, were witnesses to the Will of a Richard "Saynsberry" (a/k/a Sansbury, Sandsbury, Sandsberrie and even Stansbury) in Calvert County. On December 5, 1716, Darby had his own Will written and it was probated on February 2, 1717, permitting the inference that he died about January 1717.His Will mentioned a wife Elizabeth, and four children, Joseph, Elizabeth, Jeremiah and Ann, seemingly all under the age of 18.A subsequent Prerogative Court record from April 7, 1718, reporting on the Darby Sullivan estate accounts, stated that a payment had been made to a Thomas Bowen.
I believe Darby was living in the area of Lyons Creek Hundred, which is at the Northern end of Calvart County, adjacent to Anne Arundel.Land records show that Darby was in possession (by leasehold???) of a portion of a tract called "Archers Hays", in Lyons Creek Hundred.A Bowen family lived nearby.
On the Latter Day Saints's IGI database, there is an extracted marriage record from EITHER All Hallows Parish OR Westminster Parish, in Anne Arundel, for an Elizabeth "Swilloven" (i.e., likely Sullivan) and a Thomas Bowen, from March 13, 1717.I am working on a theory that this Elizabeth Sullivan was Darby's daughter (mentioned in his Will) and that the payment to Thomas Bowen in the accounting is because he had married Darby's daughter.
Does anyone have any information about this Sullivan family in Calvert County? Please contact me directly at [email protected].
