Dear Jean,
The condition is definitely genetic. I meant to say in my first message that you can't see the defect. The eye is lazy however. If not corrected by putting a patch over the good eye and forcing the bad eye to work the good eye will take over and make all the connections for sight leaving the bad eye blind. The eye ball itself does not look blind as in glocoma. I have done research on the name Sullivan and found a reference to it meaning, "one eyed eagle." This made me wonder if the first Sullivan had a blind eye or something? No way at this point to prove it unless I come across some reference as to his ability to see or not. I have always been curious as to the possibility of this being a thing passed on in other branches through the Sullivan genetics. Maybe it's just a coincidence I don't know?
Lesa
