Hero Pilot's Records, IQ Scores Released by School District in 'Accident'

The elementary and junior high school records of Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger III, whose scores and IQ test results were mistakenly released by his childhood school dstrict Friday.
The hero pilot who miraculously guided his crippled jet into a textbook landing in the icy Hudson River was a straight-A student as a schoolboy in Denison, Texas — but his school district gets an "F" for making his academic records public.

Ace pilot Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III was in seclusion Friday, a day after he saved the lives of 155 passengers and crew aboard US Airways Flight 1549. But America was learning much about its newest hero — even his IQ scores.

Sullenberger, 57, led the pack even as a child, when he consistently tested in the 99th percentile in every academic category. His IQ qualified him for the "genius society" Mensa when he was just 12 years old.

But his official records were never meant to be released, and the Denison school district is now scrambling to recover the confidential documents that brought the private pilot even more into the public eye.

"I don't know how that got out of the district," said Cavin Boettger, Denison High School's principal. "That was an accident that was not intended to be released."

Sullenberger has retreated to his home and not spoken publicly since his splash landing saved 155 lives Thursday in a piece of flying that New York Gov. David Paterson called the "miracle on the Hudson."

Hero Pilot's Records Released US Airways Crashes Into Hudson River When he emerges from isolation, he may have some explaining to do. The straight-A student missed 45 days of school in the 1st Grade.

Boettger said his district keeps all records in secure storage, so even 50 years after the fact they still had the facts on file. "We have to keep every transcript of every student ever," he said.

The records became public when they were scanned along with a childhood photo that was pasted to the transcript. "It was just a scan to get the photo, and then somehow that got out," he said.

Boettger, who was shocked that the files had been made public, asked FOXNews.com to delete them. Though he said he didn't know who could have made the mistake, he said he was on the case. "We're gonna try to find out who released that and who it was released to and how we could retrieve it," he said.

US Airways pilot Chesley Sullenberger gets fans on Facebook
Online admirers, who number 33,000 and growing, proclaim the captain a 'true hero,' and 'an angel' on his Facebook page.

The pilot who successfully landed a US Airways plane in the Hudson River on Thursday is America's newest celebrity. His 15 minutes have just started, but when the clock runs out, Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger III will have perma-fame online.

Each second that passes brings hundreds of new fans on his freshly minted Facebook page. At 2 p.m., the online shrine to the airplane captain had more than 33,000 fans.

At his current collection rate, Sullenberger may soon unseat Facebook's most popular celebrities: Homer Simpson holds the lead with more than 2.2 million fans; Michael Phelps is a close second with 1.8 million.

The pilot's Facebook page displays a simulation of the flight path Sullenberger took before his miraculous water landing, links to the latest news stories about him and, of course, the widely circulated photo of the white-haired pilot in his captain's uniform.

Fans of the 57-year-old pilot are nothing short of fanatical: "just a hero??? NO...you are an Angel !!!" reads one of the more than 2,000 messages on the page. Others proclaim him a "stud," a "true hero" and ask how they can request him as their pilot the next time they fly.

Sullenberger's stardom has spread to the US Airways Facebook page as well. What was once a quiet message board for travelers' questions and comments has been transformed into a Sullenberger tributary.

By this morning, fans extended their admiration: A Facebook page was created for Jeffrey Skiles, the “Hudson Miracle Co-Pilot.”

Capt Sullenberger has been dubbed "The Hero of the Hudson"
If you could choose a pilot to crash-land your plane, Captain Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger III would be a good choice.

Capt Sullenberger, 57, who ditched US Airlines Flight 1549 safely into the Hudson River in New York, has over 40 years of flying experience and heads his own safety consulting business.

The former US Air Force fighter pilot from California has served as an instructor and as an Airline Pilots Association (Alpa) safety chairman and accident investigator.

He has taken part in several USAF and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident investigations.

According to the New York Times newspaper, Capt Sullenberger is also a certified glider pilot.

Capt Sullenberger has been widely praised for his "masterful landing", which was a "miracle on the Hudson", according to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Less than a minute after his Airbus A320 to Charlotte, North Carolina, took off, Capt Sullenberger reported a "double bird strike" and asked to return to the ground, an air controllers union spokesman said.

Both engines had apparently been disabled by a flock of birds.

According to air traffic controllers, an "eerie calm" defined their communications with the cockpit as their options dwindled and the pilot decided to ditch into the Hudson, a union official told Reuters news agency.

Incredibly, Capt Sullenberger managed to land the aircraft safely on the water.

Mayor Bloomberg said that the pilot told him that the captain then "walked the plane twice after everybody else was off and tried to verify that there was nobody else onboard".

Capt Sullenberger's wife, Lorrie Sullenberger, a fitness expert in Danville, California, said she learned of the crash when her husband called her on Thursday afternoon.

"He said, 'There's been an accident'," she told CNN.

"At first I thought it was something minor, but then he told me the circumstances and my body started shaking and I rushed to get our daughters out of school," she said.

One of their neighbours, Candace Andersen, said the right pilot had been in charge at the time of the accident.

"You look at his training, you look at his experience - it was the right pilot at the right time in charge of that plane that saved so many lives," she said.
