SUIT, SUITE, BROWN, KEY, CANON, HALL, MCVOY, etc. - allied families:

SUIT, SUITE, BROWN, KEY, CANON, HALL, MCVOY, etc. - allied families:

My 4th great grandmother was Margaret Byrne, d/o Gerald Byrne and Ann Palmer (wid.Philip Allman). She married William McVoy 2-14-1799 in Mobile, AL. (aka Guillermo Macaboy).

TwO of her sisters, Mary BYRNE and Anne BYRNE married Charles HALL, Jr. who was s/o Charles HALL, Sr. & Aurelia DUPREE.

(The BROWN family that married inot Charles HALL, Jr.'s family is VERY SIGNIFICANT as they descend from Dr. Gustavus BROWN.)**

I have tried to contact Mary T. Scarola but the email doesn't work as my findings are based greatly upon her extensive research.

My paternal grandmother was surnamed "SUITE" from St. Mary's Co. MD. Her SUIT/SUITE family is STRONGLY connected to the SAME folks who are connected to your HALL family down in AL.

My great grandfather was Martin Nathaniel McVoy, Sr. who was born in Pensacola, FL in 1841. His parents were Josephine Hernandez, b. 1813, (d/o Gabriel) & William McVoy, Jr., b.1812 in Pensacola.

I never knew "why" my great-grandfather, Martin McVoy, Sr., was living in MD before the Civil War or how his family was connected to MD. I ordered his Civil War records and found he was doing an apprenticeship in MD when the war broke out.

Anyway--that is my background of how I am related to Charles Hall, Jr. My 4th great grandmother's 2 sisters were wives of this man and they lived in Baldwin Co Al. I am descended directly from Gerald Byrne & Anne Palmer.

Here is what I have RECENTLY FOUND.

First I want to say that the book on the KEY family has a bunch of errors and omissions that I need to metion before I go any further. I found a plain light green paperback book called Key and Allied Families at the VA Beach Library and I was reading through it.

The author wrote it before modern technology--but first I need to say that CLARISSA BOND KEY DID NOT DIE AS A BABY! That is simply not true. If she did, then the parents had a nother daughter also named this. But Clarissa BOND KEY grew up and moved to ALABAMA! Just like the KEY listed on the same page that everyone kept saying died early and then they found he moved to TEXAS and that is proven by a letter.

CLARISSA BOND KEY, b. 10 Feb 1794 in St. Mary's Co MD--My opinion based on a great deal of research is taht THE BOOK IS ERRED-- The author wrote it before the internet and betterinformation existed.

Clarissa BOND KEY DID NOT DIE YOUNG-- She lived and grew up and migrated South and married Col. John Haynes in Coffee Co AL.

Clarissa BOND KEY & husband Col. John HAYNES (aka Hayes/Hanes) had a daughter named Clarissa K. Haynes who was 1820 in AL.

Clarissa K. HAYNES married Peter Cornelius BYRNE, Sr who was s/o Thomas HOLMES BYRNE & Hannah DUNN.

Clarissa BOND KEY is SIGNIFICANT in this research--as there is a FAMILY ALLIANCE/ALLIED FAMILIES with SUIT/SUITE, BOND, KEY, BROWN, BROWNE, PALMER, HALL and some others and it involves Phila. PA, St. Mary's Co MD and a migration through the South and into Baldwin Co AL.

I found this entire alliance accidentally when cleaning out my Familytreemaker files! It is AMAZING!

I found Dr. Robert Morris KEY,II, b.03 Jan 1832 in Leonardtown, St. Mary's Co. MD, s/o Henry GREENFIELD SOTHORON KEY & Henrietta HILL TAYLOE, married Sarah Josephine Hall. The KEY family was in Charles & St. Mary's Co. MD which is the SAME place that my SUITE/SUIT family was from and my SUITE grandmother married my MCVOY grandfather whose dad came from Pensacola and Mobile before the Civil War to MARYLAND.

This alliance of related families is quite significant as Dr. Robt. Morris Key, II, is from the SAME FAMILY as Clarissa BOND KEY who was mother of Clarissa K. Haynes!!!

There is much more.

The Dr. Robert MORRIS KEY, II, family eventually moved to Carolina Falls, TX.

Dr. Robt. MORRIS KEY, II's father was named Henry GREENFIELD SOTHORNON KEY, b. 2-25-1790 & d. abt. 04 Apr 1872 at Tudor Hall, Leonardtown, St. Mary's Co. MD.

Dr. Robt. MORRIS KEY, II's mother was Henrietta Hill Tayloe, b. 12-4-1794 @ "Ogle Hall", Anne Arundel CO MD.
She d. 14 Jan 1832 also at Tudor Hall, Leonardtown, St. Mary's Co. MD.

Dr. Robt. M. Key, II's paternal grandfather was Philip B. KEY, b. ca. 1750 St. Mary's Co. MD. He 04 Jan 1820 also in St. Mary's Co. MD. He was married at least 2x.

THIS IS VERY SIGNIFICANT as the wife everyone attributes his children to is named Rebecca JOWLES SOTHORON. His OTHER wife was named Sophia HALL.

Sophia HALL was said to be d/o Aquilla HALL and his wife, SOPHIA WHITE.

Who was he?
Is this information correct?

Sophia HALL KEY-- HAS to be related to CHARLES HALL, SR. as there are WAY TOO MANY INTERMARRIAGES between this KEY family and its allied BROWN family to dismiss this.

Was Aquilla HALL perhaps an "unknown" son of Charles HALL, SR. who was brother of Charles HALL, JR who married the 2 BYRNE women who were sisters of my ancestress Margaret BYRNE who m. Wm. McVoy, Sr. in Mobile 2-144-1799?

I am mainly focusing on Charles HALL, JR. but this MUST relate to WHERE HIS FATHER CAME FROM BEFORE GEORGIA!!!

As previously stated, Charles HALL, JR. had a wife named Mary BYRNE (1st wife). They had several children and they lived in Baldwin Co. AL before 1800.

Charles HALL, JR. was b. 26 Oct 1776 in Savannah, GA during the American Revolution & d. 22 Mar 1843 at the family homestead in Baldwin Co AL>

Mary BYRNE, first wife of Charles HALL, Jr., was born either 02 Jun 1786 or 02 JaN 1786 (I have seen conflicting info.) & she d. 17 Oct 1818 right after childbirth and her widower remarried to her sister Anne BYRNE and they also had several more children.

But my main focus is on the children of Charles HALL, Jr. and first wife, Mary BYRNE:

I have 8 children listed for them: 1. Mary Ann Eliza M. HALL, 2. Charles HALL,III (no. 1), 3. Gerald BYRNE "Garrett" HALL, 4. Joseph HAMILTON HALL, 5. Aurelia Mary HALL, 6. William HALL, 7. John Hall, Sr., 8. Charles HALL, III (no. 2)--the first son named this died young.

Joseph HAMILTON HALL married Harriet BROWN (a cousin of the KEY FAMILY). She was b. 15 Jan 1811, Phila. PA (per Mary T. website) & was d/o William P. Brown (Has to be connected to Ann PALMER who m. Gerald BYRNE, SR.) and his wife, Sarah SMCCAMMON. **This BROWN family was MOST CERTAINLY FROM CHARLES OR ST. MARY'S CO FAMILY PRIOR TO PHILA!**

The William P. BROWN family moved from Phila. PA to Tuscaloosa, AL.

They had several other children in addition to Harriet BROWN who is mentioned above.

But IT IS SIGNIFICANT that Joseph HAMILTON HALL's wife was a member of this PARTICULAR famiily of BROWN.

It is also SIGNIFICANT that their daughter, Sarah Josephine HALL married Dr. Robert MORRIS KEY, II, b. 1832, of St. Mary's Co MD.

**WE HAVE TO FIND OUT WHO THE PARENTS WERE OF THIS PARTICULAR WILLIAM P. BROWN. He was b. abt. 1771 and was a merchant who lived in Phila. Mary T. has their MARRIAGE in NEW YORK CITY on her website and they were married by a REV. John TOWNLEY!!!

This is also so significant because a lady named Hannah TOWNLEY married Diego MCVOY, MD, Jr. who was nephew of William MCVOY & MARGARET BYRNE his wife! SHE WAS FROM NEW YORK.

Then, Joseph HAMILTON HALL's wife, Harriet BROWN also had a SISTER named Louise Cecelia HAYDEN BROWN (a definite name from St. Mary's Co MD!!!) who was b. Bet. 21 - 22 Feb 1824 either in Phila. PA or Tuscaloosa, AL. She married John HALL, SR. who was ALSO a son of Charles HALL, Jr. and first wife, Mary BYRNE!!

John HALL, Sr. was b. 22 Apr 1815 Blakely, AL & d. 15 Apr 1869 in St. Paul MN. His wife, Louise Cecelia HAYDEN BROWN HALL died 13 Oct 1868 also in St. Paul MN.

William P. BROWN who was father of Harriet & Cecelia BROWN who married children of Charles HALL, Jr. & Mary BYRNE also had a son named Marcus PALMER BROWN. HE ALSO HAD several other children whose middle initial was "P".

I believe he was related closely to Ann PALMER who married Gerald BYRNE, Sr. who were the parents of BOTH wives of Charles HALL, Jr.!!! (allied families).

The BROWN family is descended from DR. Gustavus BROWN and this family is CLOSELY inter-related to the KEY family.
(Yes--they are kin to Francis SCOTT KEY who wrote our National Anthem but not directly related-- but "cousin" related.)

There are a few other relationships I have to work on with these families.

But MY grandmother's 2nd great grandfather was Benjamin SUIT who d. 1810 in St. Mary's Co MD. He was also SOMEHOW related directly to the KEY/HALL/BROWN afamilies--just do not know "how" yet.

Benjamin SUIT was given guardianship of a young man named Henry GREENFIELD SOTHORON CARTWRIGHT in 1803 in ST. Mary's Co MD. This child was kin to Henry GREENFIELD SOTHORON KEY who was father of Robert MORRIS KEY, II, MD who married Sarah Josephine HALL, d/o Joseph Hamilton HALL.

This SAME KEY family was related to the same BROWN family.

There are 2 other DEFINITE connections.

1. Joseph MURRELL,b. Abt. 15 Apr 1809 in VA was s/o John MURRELL & Rebecca HARDAWAY. He married Mary/Maria MCVOY who was also a d/o Margaret BYRNE & William MCVOY!! Mary McVOY was b. 22 Sep 1809 in Pensacola, FL.

Rebecca HARDAWAY was from Petersburg, VA area and her family is buried in the SAME cemetary as (Blandford) as the wife of Pleasant SUIT who was s/o Benjamin SUIT. Pleasant SUIT was brother of my 3rd great grandfahter James SUIT -- and both men were sons of Benjamin SUIT who d. 1810 in St. Mary's Co MD. Pleasant Suit m. Catherine M. Lemoine. She and some of the same HARDAWAY family are buried in the SAME cemetary called BLANDFORD in Petersburg, VA-- this is NOT an accident.

It is not on, but a very kind researcher (D. Diamond) helped me find her information and here is a link to her burial:

Petersburg Will Book 6, page 2, Will of Catherine M.L. Suit

She is listed in Manual for Members-- Presbyterian Church in Petersburg, VA, No.267

Blandord Interment Records (1848-1871) pg 507.

Bur. 12-24-1871 age 79, d. of old age.
This is SIGNIFICANT because Rebecca HARDAWAY's mother was Mary BROWN SEXTON who was d/o Samuel SAXON & Mary BROWN. Mary BROWN was d/o Richard BROWN of Halifax Co VA & wife, Francis SEXTON. (found this part online so I have not verified.*)

But my guess is that Richard BROWN is part of the DR. GUSTAVUS BROWN family and so is William P. BROWN who went to Phila. I am not sure he was actually born there. This BROWN FAMILY lived in MD & VA. William P. BROWN’S son had a middle name of PALMER and my guess: Anne PALMER who m. Gerald BYRNE, SR. and were parents of BOTH wives of Charles HALL, Jr. are part of this same BROWN family!

I no longer have, but maybe someone can add to this with more information on this PARTICULAR Wm. P. BROWN and the KEY family.

Back to KEY:

Philip B. KEY who was father of Henry GREENFIELD SOTHORON KEY and grandpa of Dr. Robert Morris KEY, II who m. Sarah Josephine HALL, was s/o JOHN KEY and Cecelia BROWN so I KNOW THAT William P. BROWN of Phila. whose children married children of Charles HALL, Jr. is part of THIS EXACT FAMILY!

Then, Benjamin SUIT was connected to a man named Jesse CARTER who was from Lancaster Co VA but moved to Caswell Co NC and d. there 1815. Jesse CARTER was
Married 3x. His 3rd and last wife was Sarah “Sally” BROWN. 1773 who was d/o
John Edmunds BROWN, Sr. and wife, Anne BEDFORD of Halifax Co VA—the SAME place that Richard BROWN who was ancestor of Rebecca HARDAWAY lived.

Again—these people are all related and the common denominators are KEY & BROWN.

I am also posting this to the other related surname lists.

There is much more, but the main thing I will close this posting with is that Cecelia BROWN, b. 1732 in CHARLES CO. MD who married John KEY, MD, 1730 St. Mary's Co MD, was d/o DR. GUSTAVUS BROWN, MD & wife FRANCES FOWKE!!

These families are allied for many years in many locations!

I also wanted to add that Benjamin Suit's probable son, Samuel SOOT/SUIT who 1830's in NC had land in JONES CO NC that he got from KEY/KEYS.

Samuel "SOOT" was said to be "old" in OCT 1832, land was formerly owned by Jonathan KEYS or KEY, Sr. who related to the surname of CANON.

Jonathan KEY, Sr. had moved away from NC and West to TN & was deceased before 1832.

The Jones Co. NC land was then deeded to Sam SOOT.

Jonathan KEY had a son named Solomon KEY.

Land to be sold to Jeremiah & Thos CANNON. (CANON)
