Janet,
We have never been able to track him back to who his parents were.I have wondered abt the Lucy Reading and her Suggs husband.I believe they named a son Reading, so why not Rolling as well?
His birth date was abt Feb 7 1785 according to his tombstone. Whom ever transcribed it for the cem bk has his age at 35 when he died, but the mortality index has his death the same yr and his age at 85.I believe they mistook the 8 for a 3. His son Roling Jr would have only been 21 in 1870 so that age does not fit him either. Besides, he was on the 1880 and his father was not.On that census, Jr states his father was born in LA.Other census records he was born in KY or SC.
I have a copy somewhere of a letter written by Roling's grandson, Edward Thomas Dumas/Dumis, that states no one ever knew where their grandfather came from, he just showed up in those parts and made a good life, or something along those lines.
Any ideas?I am not directly related to him, his second wife was sister to my gggrandfather. But, his dtr,Catherine Segur Suggs, married Wilson Redwine Dumas. He was brother to my gggrandmother, Amalivia Elizabeth Dumas.
Thanks,
Rayedene
