Biography and Notes:
Harbert Lawrence Sugg Sr. Buried:
January 2006: Now then, how is it that our Harbert names a son Aquilla - while in TN and not AL?
Now .... Do Ya Think there's a connection back to Surry County, Virginia? But How?We are
all missing something of the obvious in NC.The combination of proven Harbert and Aquilla - as
well as the short excursion into Alabama - is just too much to overlook.
In brief, which Sugg cousin(s) went to Alabama around 1830, so that our Harbart Jr. and Sr. BOTH
joined them, even though both eventually returned to Tennessee?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From all of the following, we have additional children of Harbert Sr. and Prudence
- with obviously big gaps remaining: [since filled in by Mike Brown]
Davidson .1809 - ca. 1855 Coffee Co TN
Franklin ...1817 - July 1857 Chattanooga, Hamilton Co TN
................ [how did he go from machinist to Planter in seven years?]
Lavina .....1819 - aft. 1860 Coffee Co TN
Elijah . .....1825 - May 1854 Coffee Co TN
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the RootsWeb postings of Joyce Lowery - unproven set of siblings that was predefined from all census sightings in NC and TN between 1800 and 1850.From email of Mike Brown, direct descendent, exact dates and marriage:"I have the marriage date for Harbert Lawrence SUGGS and Prudence ATKINS as 4 NOV 1800, Mecklenburg Co NC". [in going back over his line, rediscovered the full set of children for Harbart Sr.]
Also found in "Descendents of William Sugg" Nanci Presley-Holley 2002 ff
1840 US Census, Bedford Co TN, Image 37 William Suggs, aged 70-80, next door to Nehemiah at age 30-40.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
per RootsWeb files of Joyce Lowery March 22, 2002 - enhanced by the discovery of the will of John H. Sugg at Rutherford County TN 1832; it would appear Elizabeth died the year before - she cites disclaimer of any dower rights by William, Timothy and Harbert.
April 2005: Joyce no longer has these entries, but now has John Henry born in 1739 (re: William born in 1768)
Children of John Henry Sugg (1759 Anson Co NC - c.1832) and Elizabeth Brothers:
[false - J. H. and Eliabeth married in 1815 Rutherford Co - these are not her children, see her will]
1. Thomas(abt. 1780) ............. proven by the will, married Nancy - presumption Thos. died before 1832
2.Mary ................ proven by the will as Mary Arnold
3. William (1768 per census) .... proven by the will
4. Timothy (1772 per census) .. proven by the will
5. Harbert (1778 per census)....proven by the will ..... names second son Aquilla!!! (no coincidence)
6. Sarah ................ proven by the will as Sarah Lee
7. Edmund ..................................proven by the will
8. Elizabeth ............ proven by the will as Elizabeth m. Henry Booth [her death prior 1832]
add: Susanna Newman from the will
[for a change, census and will are in synch]
PS Even the will only used John H. Sugg - but does explicitly name a son as Harbert.

Alright, stop guessing, here's your Smoking Gun: (with one minor problem - the Enon Minutes say John and Elizabeth were admitted in March 1834 - one of these has the date (year) wrong):

John H. Sugg Will 1827
In the name of God Amen. I, John H. Sugg, of the County of Bedford and State of Tennessee, being in a low state of health but of sound mind and memory recollecting the infirmity of old age thanks be to Almighty God, for the same.

And as to what property I shall be possessed of at my decease, my will is that it be equally divided amongst all my children who have not received their full legacy as stated above so as to make them all equal including what they have already received if there be enough to bring them all equal and in case there shall not be enough to bring them all equal. And if anything should remain after making them equal that it be equally divided amongst all my children there above named who have received their legacy in full excepted but if there shall not be enough to bring them all equal that it be so divided as to bring them as near equal as possible.
I hereby appoint William Sugg, Timothy Sugg, Harbert Sugg, my true and lawful executors to this my last will and testament and I do hereby revoke and disannul all former wills and testaments, making and ratifying this and no other to be my last will and testament. The execution of the foregoing last will and testament of John H. Sugg was duly proven by the oath of Thomas Ray and William Anderson, subscribing witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded
Recorded 27 March 1833 Jno. R. Laughlin, Clerk
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Will of Elizabeth Sugg, 1831 [written March 1831 and probated August 1832 - far too consistant - the
date on the minutes of the Enon Baptist Church must be off - HAS to be the same John and Elizabeth.
From handwriting found in other early documents, wonder if John and Elizabeth were (re)admitted
in 1831 instead of 1834?]

From email of Mr. Cass Johnson, also direct descendent, on 17 Jan 2006:
"I guess I need to talk to Michael. I need to find the census records for HL Sugg Sr and Prudence past 1840 I had assumed he was deseased. I used to have Ancestry.com but it got to expensive. I have all of HL Sugg Jr's census records from 1820 to 1850 and after his deathSusanna his wife was in the 1860 living with Priscilla Sugg Coleman and Thomas Jefferson Coleman. Do you happen to have a census record for the Harbard son of John H after 1830?
"I have all of Jr.'s in oroginal in fax viewer form and bitmap. Jr died about mid 1850's in Dickson. Susnanna then lived and died at Priscilla's. I had never looked for senior because I was under the assumption that he died before 1820. I have information somehwere around her that gives Priscilla's birth in Franklin, Alabamain 1836. I think it even gives the township".
Cass goes on to cite Jr. in Franklin County AL in 1840, and in Dickson County TN in 1850.The latter shows children born in both Alabama and Tennessee. *
However, there is a slight contradiction to all of the above when he answers that yes, Jr. died some time before his dad (Mike has Sr. in 1867), after stating that Jr. died in the mid fifties.Ancestry is better, still with flaws, but in 1860 there is no sign of Jr., confirming Cass' scenerio. Otherwise, here is what Cass and Zieman resarchers have put together:
TSLA, Bedford County Tennessee Deeds, Book FF, Page 510
Deed, Baxter Ragsdale Sr. to William Thomas
12 Aug 1836 $20 for 28 acres on Wartrace Fork; begins on E boundary line of grant #219; N 32 poles, then W to Wilson B. Rushing's and Absolom Manley's NE corner in Thomas Haile's S boundary line; with their line W 60 poles to Drury Daniel's NE corner; E 74 poles to the beginning

P. Sugg, age 68, a female, probably his wife [Prudence Atkins of course] and
Franklin, age 33, a machinistLavina, age 31,Elijah, age 25, a farmer
Next door is...
Davidson Sugg, age 41, a machinistN.J. Sugg, age 41, a female. (his wife?)
Celia A. , age 9B.R., age 6
1850 Dickson County TN, Middle District: *
Image 65, Household 462: H. L. Sugg 50 NC, Susanna 44 TN, Susanna 16 AL, Priscilla 14 AL, Elizabeth A. 12 AL, John H. 6 TN and Nathaniel W. 16 TN (listed last and born TN, has to be a nephew)Otherwise, Harbert Jr. is proven in Alabama from 1834 to 1838 - he must have gone ahead in 1830 to find a place, while rest of family stayed behind in Bedford.(Household of Harbert Sugg with no adult male present).Remember that he was also found in the 1840 Census in Franklin Co AL.
1860 Coffee County TN
Harbert Suggs age 82 from NC, Lanna Suggs age 40 from TN. (Lavina in 1850)
" I wonder why Harbert Jr Sugg, Elijah Sugg and Franklin Sugg all died in the 1850's Hargert Jr was abt 53, Elijah was 29, Franklin was 32. Yellow fever or just bad Genes. Davidson disappeared after 1850. So sad".
Yes, curious, especially since they were so spread out - Dickson County, Coffee County and Chatanooga.
