The only Subletts I know of in Montgomery County at that time was the family of William Sublett Sr. (1777 - 1868). William had four sons - William Jr, Abraham, Edward and Samuel. His wife, Elizabeth Redden Sublett, had died prior to 1850.

William Jr. married Matilda Mitchell
Abraham married Martha Jane Franklin
Edward married Jane Hall (this is my line)
Samuel married Margaret Crockett.

William Sublett SR did not name any daughters in his will, only the above named sons (and the sons of William Jr. The younger William had died in 1844).

William SR was not listed with a female of Margaret's age in the 1840 MC census. However, it seems that some of William SR's children may have been raised by someone else, possibly with relatives in Charlotte County where they were supposed to have been born.

A "family history letter" suggests that Edward Sublett's father (not named in the letter but who would have been William SR) died when Edward was very young, and that Edward was raised by someone else. Since Ed's father did not die until Ed was about 48, the letter is apparently incorrect. But a court record from Montgomery County (1838) says: "Edward Sublett son of Wm Sublett came into court and made choice of his father the said Wm Sublett to be his guardian."

It seems the only reason that someone would need to have their own father appointed as their guardian would be if this person had previously had someone else appointed as their guardian, most likely because they were living in a different county/state than their father. This would suggest that there was some validity to the claim in the letter that Edward had been raised by someone other than his father. This may also have been true of some of Ed's other siblings.

The letter also states that Ed came to America from France, but this is unlikely as the family had already been in America for four generations when he was born. Unless, of course, Edward had returned to France for some reason to live with relatives there, but this also seems unlikely. I mention this because of the family tradition that Margaret came from Germany, and sometimes family traditions can be demonstrably wrong. The Sublett family did pass through Germany on their way to America from France (they were Huguenots), so this is possibly where that tradtion originated. Edward's gg-grandfather (and Margaret's as well, if they were indeed brother and sister), Pierre Louis Sublett, was born in Germany.

I thought that perhaps all this would at least give you another avenue to explore if you have made no progress since you posted your message in '03.
