Jacob STIERS/STYERS, PA-1700's Family History
Quoting from Geo. M. Stiers (1906-1987), OKC, OK
“My GG Grandfather was Jacob Stiers who lived in the 1770’s in Northumberland Co PA (Probably Snyder Co. now). In 1778, his wife and several of their children were massacred by the Indians. Some of the children and Jacob escaped or were not at home at the time of the event. In 1784, Jacob purchased a Land Grant from the State of Pennsylvania in what was then Cumberland Co., later becoming Mifflin Co. by 1790 when he is listed in the census as living in that part of the county, which was north of the Juniata river. When the State rewrote their land grants, about 1850, this piece of land was located in what is now Juniata County. By 1795-96 Jacob had moved his brood and second wife to what is now Clermont County OH. He died in 1803 and if I read his will right, there were four children to whom he left only one dollar each. Everything went to his second wife and her children by him. He named these four children as Anna, Elizabeth, Jacob Jr. and John. I think that these four children were the ones who survived the killing. There is a record of Anna, who escaped, who married Carrel Moore, who was killed in Dec 1790 and who then married a cousin or Uncle of Carrel’s name, Henry. They moved to Greene Co PA in 1795. There was one girl who was taken away by the Indians and lived with them the rest of her life. This must have been Elizabeth. That leaves Jacob and John, which fits into the family picture.
If a comparison of the 1790 Mifflin County census and the 1800 census of Greene Co. is made it becomes evident that there was quite a movement from Mifflin to Greene in this period, possibly at the time that Anna and Henry moved there. Later Jacob went to Harrison County, OH in 1810. John is suppose to have gone to Canada after the War of 1812 and found his sister. She declined to come back to the white people.John stayed in Canada.”[Mary Stiers m. cir 1793 John Sharpnack (Sr), Mifflin Co PA – they were part of the migration from Mifflin Co PA to Greene Co PA, along with the Moores and Stiers/Styers. I am just sharing this information, which may have some mistakes, but also some clues for those searching these particular Stiers/Styers].
