Stuyvesant, Steibesant, Stiveson (PA)
I am looking for information on my ancestor George Stuyvesant who lived in Berks County, Pennsylvania between 1750 and 1790.
He was an immigrant (he took an oath of alliegence to the British Crown in Philadelphia circa 1760).He may have been Dutch or German. He married into a German speaking family from the Palantine. His wife was Eva Christina Schall.
I know they were members of Hill Church, Pike Twp, Berks County, PA. Four children were baptised at that church: Tobias (1759), George, Jr (1761), Magdalena (1765) and unnamed (1767).
George's name is always associated with his inlaws.I have been able to find no reference to his blood relatives -- although like everyone else with the name Stuyvesant there are family stories connecting him to the colonial governor of NY. (Perhaps a collateral branch that migrated to American later - or - a decendant of a Stuyvesant who returned to Europe?)
His name is Germanicized in Church records (Steibesant, Steipesand and many other variations). His name is Anglicized in civil records (Stiveson). He is listed as George Stiveson in the 1790 census - still in Berks County. His descendants are today Stivesons, Stivensons, and Stevensons.
I would like to know where George came from and who his relatives were?
