I've been doing some genealogy hunting for many years.
As time has gone on I've become more convinced that this information about Barbara Hochstetler which appears in this book is not accurate. We'll probably never know for sure, but I remember reading this book long ago and the author reported in the book that the information about Barbara Hochstedler was almost non-existant, hardly anyone even remembered her.
We clearly have two different sets of Stutzman families descended from most likely the same Christian Stutzman of Berks County, PA back in the early 1700's. One branch stayed in the Berks County areas, and the other seemed to be in Lancaster County, PA. The Berks County bunch were Evangelical Lutherans until about 1910, while the Lancaster County group were Amish and evidentally left fairly early and moved into Western Pennsylvania and from there further west and south. We know that Christian's father was baptized as a Lutheran in Germany before he sailed to our American colonies. There were deaths on the ship, including much of Christian's family. I believe two of his sons survived and were boarded out to Amish families. As they grew one son, Jacob, stayed with the Amish faith, while the other son, Christian returned to his roots as an Evangelical Lutheran.
